Group 1: Classification for series-production touring cars used until 1981. Some examples are: Saab 99EMS/Turbo, Ford Cortina GT.

Group 2: Classification for touring cars used until 1981. Some examples are: Toyota Corolla TE20, Renault 17 Gordini.

Group 3: Classification for series-production grand touring cars used until 1981. Some example are: Alpine A110, Fiat 124 Sport Spyder.

Group 4: Classification for grand touring cars used until 1981. Some example are: Lancia Beta Coupe, Opel Kadett GT/E.

Group 5: Classification for sports racing cars but also including special production rally cars, used until 1981.
Some example are: Alpine A310 V6, Toyota Celica 2000GT RA40.

Group 6: Classification used intermittently with sports racing cars in the 1960's anad 1970's, but also including the occassional special production rally car.
Some examples are: Ford Escort Twin Cam Mk I, Porsche 911/S.

Group A: Classification used for highly modified-series production based cars, introduced by the FIA in 1982. Some example are: Audi 200 Quattro, BMW M3.

Group B: Classification used for the outrageously powerful special production cars with a minimium build quantity of 200, introduced by the FIA in 1982 and consequently banned in 1986. Some example are: Peugeot 205 T16, Mazda RX-7 Group B.

Group N: Classification used for slightly modified standard-series production cars, introduced by the FIA in 1982.
Some examples are: Renault 5 GT Turbo, Volkswagen Gold GTi.

Group S: This was a stillborn replacement category for Group B, which was both invented and scrapped in 1986.

WR Car: Classification used for World Rally Cars and the FIA newest set of rules, established in 1997.
Some examples are: Subaru Impreza, Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution VI.
