CHEVROLET INTRODUCTION:

THE EARLY YEARS:

Even though Chevrolet was actually incorporated on November 3rd, 1911, its first car didn't roll off the line until late 1912. In 1915, Chevrolet's flagship model was the 490 and it was direct competition for the Ford Model T. After outselling Ford for the first time in 1927, Chevrolet never looked bask as it became America's number one selling car manufacturer for many years to come.

DETROIT MUSCLE:

Things really got interesting for Chevrolet in the late sixties and early seventies. For Chevy, it was more than being the first company to actually produce over 3 million cars and trucks in a single year. It was more than just a time of prosperity for the Camaro by selling over 220,000 in its very first year of production. It was the new image that was capturing people's hearts and minds - it was the new breed of "muscle cars", some of which were ready to race right as they left the showroom floor.

THE NEW CHEVY:

The late seventies and early eighties saw an overall decline in performance cars from all manufacturers, but this trend wasn't followed for long. In 1990, the Chevrolet Corvette shattered three world speed records on the Utah Salt Flats. In 1992, we saw the advent of Chevrolet's high tech LT1 engine, a giant leap forward that was blessed with a host of technical refinements. And most recently, in 2001, Chevrolet introduced the new Corvette Z06, a production vehicle with 385-hp and 385-ft.lbs. of torque.

CHEVROLET'S MUSCLE CARS:

During the golden years of vintage muscle cars, car manufacturers were faced with simple marketing arithmetic. The idea was to take a bare bones base model vehicle, then stuff in the largest engine they could create and sell it to the booming 1960's youth market.

Chevrolet successfully implemented this equation to create some of America's most powerful and dominant cruisers to ever rocket down the quarter-mile drag strip. They were many vehicles that made an impression, but the following were some of Chevy's most radical and memorable: 1969 Chevrolet Corvette ZL-1 427, 1969 Chevrolet Camaro ZL-1 427 COPO, and 1970 Chevrolet Chevelle SS 454 LS6.

CHEVROLET CAMARO Z28/SS:

1997 marked the 30th anniversary of the Camaro from the birth of its first model. Through changes and improvements implemented every year, the model is always evolving. In the 2001 model, the exterior is given an even sportier atmosphere. The front end underwent major changes with the bumper area being given a larger opening with a smoother molding, and the hood being given a power bulge. In addition, the rear was given a new shape and 17-inch alloy wheels were added. Changes were also made on the mechanical side. Its LS1 powerplant is the same 5.7L V8 OHV used in the Corvette. For the Camaro, the Corvette powerplant was powered down somewhat, but it still puts out maximum power of 325 hp @ 5200 rpm. The transmission mated to these engines is a 4-speed automatic or an optional 6-speed manual. Naturally, it is only rear-wheel drive.

CHEVROLET CORVETTE Z06:

The newly added Chevrolet Corvette Z06 model boasts a 5.7L V8 OHV engine which Chevrolet dubbed the LS6. This is an extension of LS1 with the engine block itself refined to be able to withstand high rpm's along with a new design and a more efficient exhaust manifold. As a result of adopting camshafts with a new design, changing the exhaust system to titanium and other improvements, it generates a maximum power of 385 hp @ 6000.

The exterior features a hardtop with a fixed roof instead of a targa top on the body and newly designed aluminum wheels. Moreover, an air intake is provided at the bottom edge of the fender in the front of the rear wheels, giving a customized look. The interior color scheme is a red/black two-tone called Torch Red.

On the mechanical side, the vehicle control system called Active Handling had been stepped up to its second generations and also the FE4 suspension has also been tuned for use in the Z06. The rear axle has been strengthened and an aluminum driveshaft was also adopted. These and other improvements to many different components have improved its performance even further, making it one of the best performing American sports cars to date.
