Lotus:
When Colin Chapman founded Lotus in 1952, he built road cars to fund
his motor racing ambitions - dreams that lead Lotus to 79 grand prix victories and seven F1
Constructors' World Championships. Given that racing heritage, Lotus has been a builder of
some of the best sports cars and engines in the world.
LOTUS ESPRIT SPORT 350:
Founder Colin Chapman had designed the many production Lotuses to be
lightweight, first and foremost, but in a major change of management policy in the 1970's,
they began to produce luxury sport models tailored to North American tastes. Since its debut in
1975, the Esprit became synonymous with the second generation of Lotus. With its mid-engine and
rear-wheel drive, the Esprit can be said to be the successor to the Europa.
Giorgio Guigiaro initially did the styling, but the baton was passed back to
Lotus in 1987 for their original design of the second-generation model, which closely resembled
the original.
The Esprit Sport 350 is a special model developed in 1992 for entry in GT
races, and its V8 engine develops 350 hp. The Esprit V8 GT/SE, which can be said to be the
production version of this car, is also given the same engine. The Esprit GT1 was used as the
Lotus entry for GT races in the 1990's, but with the appearance of the Elise, this role ended
with the 1996 season. Even after the debut of the Elise and other third-generation Lotuses one
after another, production of the rare 2.0-liter 4-cylinder turbo Esprit GT3 and the Esprit V8
GT/SE is still continuing.
